Listening

Re: What is Taylor Sirard Doing?

Although I absolutely love writing about myself, as this blog's title may subtly suggest, there is such a wide variety of experience that can't be told from my perspective. So, this post will be dedicated to sharing those stories that I could never tell. How cool!

In celebration of Black History Month, the content shared below comes from the African American community. Although most of this content isn't historical, I believe listening to contemporary stories can help white folks, like myself, realize why it is so important to learn the history of African Americans we often neglect.

I know some of you are super stoked to get to the sources below, and I won't slow you down. I've selected some of my favorite content, enjoy!

For those of you that remain skeptical, before you click away, ask yourself a few questions:

When is the last time you listened to an African American voice with intent to truly listen?

How diversified are your social media feeds?

Have you read any books penned by a black author?

How can we expect to understand racism in the United States without listening to those who experience it?

What do we gain when we seek to understand different perspectives?

Facebook is, of course, more personal than the other social media sites. Instead of specific accounts, I have a couple of suggestions.

Join a group that is POC centered. In one such group, someone shared this fantastic Black History Month Library.

Like, follow, and share pages of your local black businesses and artists.

These can be found by a search on whatever platform you use to listen to podcasts (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.) The Loud Speakers Network is a great source for podcasts in general. They also do a good job producing content from African American and other marginalized communities.
